The Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy is a Ministry of Education directive to ensure that all members of the diverse school communities in our province are treated with respect and dignity. The Strategy helps educators better identify and remove discriminatory biases and systemic barriers to student achievement. The Strategy supports the provincial government’s three key education priorities which are high student achievement, reduced gaps in student achievement, and an increased accountability and public confidence in Ontario’s publicly funded schools.
Currently in year three of a four year plan, the Strategy works towards an equity of outcomes for all students. In October 2010 the KPDSB revised the existing policy 503 Racial and Ethnocultural Equity to support the changes required for compliance with Ministry of Education directives around equity and inclusive education. Boards and schools must understand, identify, address, and eliminate the biases, barriers, and power dynamics that can limit students’ success in school and in life. School and community families are encouraged to talk to their local schools to help the schools understand what their children and families need to be successful. Our updated policy 503 Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy is available on our website and fully outlines our commitment to working with all those who learn and work in our schools, and live in our communities.
