On this page, you will find information regarding job action in our schools for the 2019-2020 school year. The information below has been separated into three sections - important updates, elementary and secondary - to assist students and families in finding the information that pertains to them.

IMPORTANT UPDATES

UPDATE - FEBRUARY 13, 2020 – ALL KPDSB SCHOOLS (elementary and secondary) CLOSED TO STUDENTS ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2020.  

The four major education unions in Ontario that represent elementary and secondary teachers and education workers have given notice that their members will participate in a one-day walkout across the province that will close all KPDSB schools. 

All KPDSB schools (elementary and secondary) will be CLOSED to students on Friday, February 21, 2020.  Childcares and EarlyON Centres in our elementary schools will remain open, but before and after school programming will not be operating.  Cooperative Education placements for secondary students will be cancelled for the day. 

Adult Education sites in Dryden, Kenora and Sioux Lookout will also be CLOSED to students.

UPDATE - FEBRUARY 11, 2020 – sECONDARY (gRADES 9-12) tERM oNE rEPORT cARDS

As you are aware, secondary educators are currently engaged in job action in Ontario. This means that they can legally withdraw services, up to and including a full withdrawal (strike).

Part of the job action announced by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) states that teachers will not input comments on provincial report cards.  We wanted to inform our secondary families that the Term One provincial report card will be issued to families on February 13, 2020, with your child’s grades/marks on it; however, the report card will not include comments from your child’s teachers.  Similarly, alternative report cards for special education students will be issued, but with limited comments.

UPDATE - JANUARY 24, 2020 – ELEMENTARY (KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE 8) TERM ONE REPORT CARDS

As you are aware, elementary educators are currently engaged in job action in Ontario. This means that they can legally withdraw services, up to and including a full withdrawal (strike).

Part of the job action announced by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) states that teachers will not input marks/grades and comments on provincial report cards.  At this time, our elementary schools are not able to issue the Kindergarten Communication of Learning or the Grade 1-8 provincial report cards for Term One.  This also includes alternative report cards for special education students.  We are not able to provide a timeline for when Term One report cards may be available to families at this time.

UPDATE - JANUARY 13, 2020 - ETFO Escalates Job Action to Phase 3 Across the Province

Late last week, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) announced they would escalate job action in Ontario schools to Phase 3, beginning on Monday, January 13, 2020.  ETFO members in KPDSB schools include elementary teachers, occasional teachers and designated early childhood educators.  Phase 3 does impact extracurricular activities in our elementary schools.

UPDATE - JANUARY 9, 2020 - Grade 9 EQAO math assessment for January 2020

Please be aware that Grade 9 students currently taking math courses in semester one in KPDSB secondary schools will not be participating in the annual Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) Grade 9 Math Assessment this January.

MY CHILD IS IN KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE 8, what do i need to know?

There are currently two unions that have announced job action that may impact our elementary schools, the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF).  Please see below for details.

PLEASE NOTE - ALL KPDSB SCHOOLS (ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY) ARE CLOSED TO STUDENTS ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2020

PLEASE NOTE - At this time, our elementary schools are not able to issue the Kindergarten Communication of Learning or the Grade 1-8 provincial report cards for Term One due to ongoing job action.  This also includes alternative report cards for special education students. 

Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO)

Staff Represented by ETFO in KPDSB Elementary Schools: Elementary teachers, occasional teachers and designated early childhood educators.

Overview of Current Job Action - Phase 3 - Effective January 13, 2020 - ETFO has announced they will begin Phase 3 of their job action on Monday, January 13, 2020.  Phase 3 includes not planning or participating in any assemblies, not participating in extracurricular activities, and not participating in field trips.  Families should be aware that the withdrawal from extra-curricular activities and field trips by ETFO members impacts our Hockey Canada Skills Academies.  As a result of ETFO’s Phase 3 job action, all extra-curricular activities and field trips (ie. hockey academies, swimming programs, curling, recreational activities) led/supervised by ETFO members have been suspended as of January 13, 2020, until further notice. For more information, please see our notice to families by clicking here.

Overview of Current Job Action - Phase 2 - Effective December 10, 2019 - ETFO has announced they will begin Phase 2 of their job action on Tuesday, December 10, in addition to Phase 1 work-to-rule (Phase 1 began on November 26, 2019, with a withdrawal of certain administrative work).  Phase 2 work-to-rule includes things like not planning any new field trips to occur before June 30, 2020, not serving as Teacher in Charge (used when administrators are not in schools), and not collecting monies or participating in the electronic collection of monies for school-based activities except those for charitable causes.

Overview of Current Job Action - Phase 1 - Effective November 26, 2019: ETFO has stated that the announced work-to-rule action will target Ministry of Education and school board administrative tasks. This means ETFO staff in our schools are withdrawing from certain administrative activities/work for the duration of the work-to-rule action.  This includes things like participation in any school board or Ministry of Education professional learning offered outside of the instructional day, participation in any Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) related activities and not attending staff/division/grade team meetings.  For more information, please see our notice to families by clicking here.

Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF)

Staff Represented by OSSTF in KPDSB Elementary Schools: Education Assistants and office, clerical, library and occasional staff.

Overview of Current Job Action: OSSTF has stated that the announced work-to-rule action will be a limited withdrawal of services. This means OSSTF staff in our schools will no longer perform certain duties including participating in EQAO preparation or testing, completing Ministry of Education reports, and participating in unpaid staff meetings outside the scheduled school day.  For more information, please see our notice to families by clicking here.

Overview of Current Job Action: In addition to rotating one-day strikes across the province, OSSTF announced work-to-rule action with a limited withdrawal of services. This means OSSTF staff in our schools will no longer perform certain duties including participating in EQAO preparation or testing, completing Ministry of Education reports, and participating in unpaid staff meetings outside the scheduled school day.  Families should also be aware that OSSTF members will be participating in Information Pickets periodically before and after school hours as a part of the announced job action. For more information, please see our notice to families by clicking here.
