Welcome to virtual learning!  Virtual classes start SEPTEMBER 11, 2020!

*Outreach to remote learning families will start on September 9, 2020.

The start of a new school year is an exciting time and we expect this year to be just as exciting!  On behalf of our staff, we are excited to welcome our remote learning families to our new KPDSB Virtual School for the 2020-2021 school year!

The KPDSB Virtual School will be staffed by teachers and support staff from across our system allowing students and families to engage with skilled educators and specialty support staff with a variety of experiences and who thrive in a virtual environment. The virtual school will also have two dedicated principals to support students and staff. Students in the virtual school will be grouped with classmates from many communities allowing students to interact with a variety of peers.  Remote learning students will remain connected to their “home” school, but their instruction, assessment, reporting and classmates will be connected to the virtual school's teachers, administrators and activities.

The KPDSB Virtual School will function much like a traditional classroom/school. Classes will be synchronous and students will have attendance taken, be offered breaks, and there will be opportunities for whole class, small group and individual instruction. This is an exciting opportunity for students to engage in new ways of learning, be challenged and have important social and emotional supports. Student time in class will meet the requirements as outlined below by the Ontario Ministry of Education:

Division

Grade level

Daily Minimum Synchronous Learning Time

Elementary

Kindergarten

180 minutes

Grade 1 to 3

225 minutes

Grade 4 to 8

225 minutes

Secondary

Grade 9 to 12

300 minutes

*Synchronous learning is a term used to describe learning that occurs at the same time, but not in the same place. Synchronous learning means online learning where students learn from and with teachers, other staff and peers in real time, but not in person.

Students in virtual schools can expect to hear from their teachers and/or school administration starting the week of September 9th with classes fully underway by September 11, 2020. As we build our virtual school and classrooms you will receive more information from us, including student timetables, the school website, technology distribution and much more!

We know you will have many questions and we will do our best to share information out as quickly as possible. We are very excited to work with you as we kick off the 2020-2021 school year and welcome once again to the KPDSB Virtual School!
